For the past two years Lyric baritone Joel Wolcott has been living in Vienna, Austria, where he made his international debut, singing the roles of Count & Figaro in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, under the auspices of The Sound of Austria. Since then Joel has become a sought after concert soloist and opera performer. He has performed with concerts in many venues throughout Austria and Europe. Shortly after arriving in Vienna he become associated with Oper in der Krypta where he is now Artistic Director. As well as directing most of their productions he has also performed many roles including; Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Ricardo in I Puritani, Marcello in La Boheme. He will continue to utillize his directing and singing skills in Oper in der Krypta’s next season productions of Carmen, La Traviata, Le nozze di Figaro, Cosi fan tutte, Don Giovanni and many.
Mr. Wolcott has a Bachelor of Music degree from University of Montana and he had his professional operatic premiere as Goro in Madama Butterfly for Lyric Opera Theater of Montana. After finishing his studies in Montana, Joel spent six years working in the Phoenix area and studying at Arizona State University, where he received a Master’s Degree and teaching at Central Arizona College. Under the tutelage of Dr. Jerry Doan, Mr. Wolcott performed the roles of Archibald Craven in The Secret Garden, Conte in Le Nozze di Figaro, the Vicar in Albert Herring, and Falke in Die Fledermaus. He was also a core member in the Arizona Opera Chorus where he performed numerous choruses and had a small role in Puccini’s La bohème.
In addition to being a singer, Joel is an aspiring arts administrator. In Phoenix, he started a small opera production company called Opera Revolution, where he worked on every aspect of operatic production from finance, music direction, stage direction, public relations, advertising, and sales. After three successful seasons, Mr. Wolcott decided to focus on his performance career which eventually brought him to Vienna, Austria.
