Who can apply to the Vienna Summer Music Festival? Do I have to be currently enrolled in a college or university program?

Any musician 18 years and older is eligible to apply for the program.

How do I apply to the Opera Institute?

Applicants for the Opera Institute are required to submit two contrasting operatic arias, one of which needs to be sung in French, Italian, or German. Applicants also interested in auditioning to participate in the Musical Theater Showcase must also submit a performance of a ‘Legit’ / Golden Age era musical theatre piece.

 

Applicants will provide their Name, Address, Phone number, Email Address, Date of Birth, Education, Voice Type, Current Applied Teacher, Previous Voice Teachers, Web Address, Headshot, Resume, and Audition Materials and via the online form provided below.

How do I apply to the Composers Forum?

Applicants for the Composition Forum should submit two original scores of contrasting style and instrumentation. The pieces prepared should be written for use in the Composers Forum, and can be any type of acoustic music demonstrating the composers ability to compose (wind ensemble, orchestra, percussion ensemble, chamber music, solos, etc. are all acceptable forms of composition).

How do I apply to the Chamber Music Program?

Instrumental applicants can apply for the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, and tuba.

 

Applicants for the Chamber Music Program Instrumental are required to submit one solo recording (with or without accompaniment) of a concerto, sonata, or etude.  A second recording of the applicant performing in a chamber ensemble is recommended, though not required.  Should an applicant not have a solo recording, two chamber ensemble entries will suffice. Recordings should be no more than two years old.

How do I use file sharing to submit my application materials?

The exact process will depend upon what file sharing platform you choose to utilize, but the basic process will be the same. If you do not already have an account on one of the following file sharing programs (Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or iCloud) you can create one for free. After you have created an account you will create a folder. This folder is where you will add all of your relevant application or audition materials, including audio or video files, YouTube links, resumes, papers, scores, etc. Once you have added all finalized application and audition materials you will copy and paste a link to the materials you have collected into the “Share Link” section of the Application Form.

When are the applications due? When can I expect to hear if I’ve been accepted?

Applications are due March 15th 2018.

 

You will hear approximately 2-weeks after you submit your application if you are accepted.

Is there a waiting list?

Yes, there is a waiting list. The waiting list is determined by the number of applicants per program. If you are placed on a wait list, you will be notified by April 1 st if you are accepted.

Financial
How do I make tuition payments?

Electronic payments, checks, and money orders can be made out to Partners for the Arts Abroad|LLC upon acceptance into the Vienna Summer Music Festival.

What is included in the cost of tuition? What is NOT included?

Please visit each program’s informational page to see what is included in the cost of tuition. Airfare and food are not included in the program.

Is there a recommended airline? How much should I expect to pay for air travel?

We recommend flying into the  Vienna International Airport.

 

Airfare costs depend on when you book your flight.  We encourage you to book your flights as soon as possible once you accept your place in the Vienna Summer Music Festival.

How much money should I bring for personal expenses?

We encourage you to budget for at least $500 – $800 for the duration of your attendance.

Are there scholarships available? Is there a separate application for scholarships?

Scholarships are available, and will be awarded up to $1,500 to select applicants. For those applicants that are interested in applying for scholarship, a brief scholarship application essay of no more than 500 words answering the question, “What are your career goals, and how would a scholarship to the Vienna Summer Music Festival help you achieve those goals?”, a letter of recommendation, and a copy of the applicant’s unofficial transcripts (if applicable), should be sent in addition to application materials.  The subject line should contain the applicant’s first and last name, program of interest, and the text “Scholarship Essay.”

 

Interested applicants will receive scholarship funds based upon their submitted audition materials and essay.

 

Scholarship Application Requirements:

How soon do I have to pay?

A non-refundable 500EUR payment is due within 30 days of acceptance into the program. Final tuition payments are due April 15 th . We are happy to work with you if you are having difficulty making payments on time, however, we ask that you please communicate with us so we may accomadate you.

Travel
Ich spreche nicht Deutsch (I don’t speak German). Is language going to be a problem?

Fortunately, English is very popular language in Austria as it is a very popular tourist nation. However, it would however be useful to learn some basic conversational German. Vienna Summer Music Festival staff members will be readily accessible and available should you need any help.

What currency is used in Austria? When should I exchange my money? Can I use an Austrian ATM?

Austria is a member of the European Union and therefore uses Euros.  It is encouraged to have money exchanged at least two weeks prior to your departure at your local American bank.  American banks take a few business days to convert funds from USD to EUR.

 

Typically you can use any Austrian ATM with your American bank card, and it will output Euros.

How long can I stay without needing a visa?

You can stay in Vienna for 90 days without needing a visa.

Do I have time to apply for a passport? How long does my passport need to be valid after I return from the program?

Yes, if you do not yet have a passport, we encourage you to apply at your earliest convenience.  It takes approximately 4 – 6 weeks to get a U.S. Passport if you do not already have one. You can get a passport on rush order, however it is usually more expensive.

Will my cell phone work in Vienna? Will there be wifi available for other communication?

If you do not have an international plan with your current service provider, your cell phone will not work.  You can obtain a SIM card which can be utilized with any smart phone, which will allow you to use your phone.  We encourage you to download Viber, Skype, or WhatsApp, so you can communicate with your friends and families back in the U.S.

Do I need an adaptor for electronics?

Yes, you will need a European plug adapter which you can purchase at places like Amazon, Target, and other commercial outlets. 

What are the customs regulations regarding instruments?

According the European Union’s website instruments are considered personal luggage and should be claimed upon arriving to Austria. 

Will there be a bass/harp/tuba provided by the festival or will I need to obtain my own?

The Vienna Summer Music Festival will provide basses, harps, and tubas for students studying these instruments. 

What should I expect the weather to be like?

The weather will be gorgeous! Summer in Vienna is generally warm and sunny!

Can I arrive early / late?

You can arrive early, however, you will be personally and financially responsible for providing accommodations outside the festival dates.

Is transportation in the city included?

Yes, your tuition covers local transportation in the city.  Vienna has a robust subway system that can easily get you anywhere you need or want to be in the city.

Are there any safety or security threats I should be aware of?

Vienna has long been considered one of the safest cities in Europe. There will be a safety orientation once you arrive in Vienna for the Vienna Summer Music Festival.

Festival
Is there a placement audition upon arrival?

Instrumentalists will do a brief live audition for orchestra placement upon arrival.

What is performance attire (for instrumentalists)? Will my costume be provided? Do I need to bring character shoes (vocalists)?

For instrumentalists, we ask that you bring performance black clothes.  For vocalists, your costume will be provided, however, please bring concert dress for recitals and special events. Yes, you will need to bring your own character shoes.

When and where are the performances? Will they be open to the general public?

The performances will occur in the center districts of Vienna and will available to the general public. 

Are there excursions?

Yes, there will be a cultural excursion to Salzburg for a weekend as well as several cultural excursions in the city of Vienna.  If you would like to take trips to surrounding areas during your free time, you are more than welcome.  

How much free time will I have?

While this is an intense program focused on performance and practice, there will be plenty of free time for you to tour the city and hang out with the new friends you will make on your trip.

Will linens be provided or should I bring bedding and towels?

Linens and towels will be provided. 

Are meals included? What accommodations are available for my dietary restrictions?

Breakfast is included. There is an abundance of restaurants and local dining that are very affordable. If you have dietary restrictions, please contact us and we can help facilitate places for you to eat.
