Meet Jiarui Mao, soprano

Jiarui Mao is a soprano from China and a second-year Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) candidate at the University of Iowa. She holds a Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelor of Music degree from the Wuhan Conservatory of Music. A versatile performer, Jiarui has sung principal roles such as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte and Suzel in L’amico Fritz. She has also appeared in opera scenes as Giuditta in Giuditta, Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare, Mimì in La Bohème, Zi Jun in Shang Shi (Chinese opera), and Hua Mulan in Mulan Poem (Chinese opera).

In addition to her stage work, Jiarui has given solo recitals in both the United States and China, presenting a wide array of vocal repertoire. She has a deep passion for performing in multiple languages and has received acclaim for her interpretation of art songs in Czech, Portuguese, German, Italian, French, English, Chinese, and Russian. Her artistic interests lie in exploring the intersection of linguistic expression, cultural context, and vocal technique.

As a performer-scholar, Jiarui is committed to bridging Eastern and Western operatic traditions while engaging with historically informed performance practices. Through her doctoral studies, she aims to bring renewed insight, authenticity, and emotional nuance to both canonical masterpieces and lesser-known works.

Come see her perform this July in the Vienna Summer Music Festival!
