Meet Diya Sukumaran, mezzo-soprano

Diya Sukumaran, mezzo-soprano, is a sophomore at the University of Connecticut, where she’s pursuing a double major in Vocal Performance and Computer Science. She studies voice with Dr. Constance Rock and performs with both the UConn Concert Choir and Collegium Musicum. Recent highlights include performing the role of Minerva in UConn Opera’s Orphée aux enfers and earning second place in the 2024 NATS Connecticut Classical Lower College Division.

In addition to opera, Diya has a strong background in musical theater, with past roles in Curtains, Mamma Mia!, Chicago, Puffs, She Kills Monsters, and The Addams Family. She’s also taken part in opera scenes as Dorabella in Così fan tutte and Poppea in L’incoronazione di Poppea.

Outside of singing, Diya has played flute and saxophone in UConn’s Marching and Symphonic Bands, and she’s been dancing for over 15 years in Bharatanatyam and Bollywood styles. More recently, she joined UConn Ballroom Dancing in order to expand her knowledge of dance.

With a passion for interdisciplinary work, Diya is especially interested in how music and technology intersect. She’s incredibly grateful for the support of her family, teachers, and mentors, and she’s excited to be part of the 2025 Vienna Summer Music Festival.
