Meet Renier van Rooyen, classically trained vocalist

Renier van Rooyen is a classically trained vocalist based in Cape Town, South Africa. His passion for music was ignited during his teenage years through his involvement with the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands Youth Choir, with whom he toured both nationally and internationally. In 2023, he earned a Bachelor of Music degree with a specialisation in Vocal Performance from Stellenbosch University.

Renier’s recent performance highlights include the supporting role of Joly, along with minor roles and ensemble work, in the International Lyric Academy’s production of Les Misérables (2024), directed by David Fiorello and staged in Vicenza, Italy. He also appeared in the ensemble of Opera UCT’s The Tales of Hoffmann (2023), directed by Steven Stead and performed in Cape Town, South Africa.

While trained in classical music, Renier is enthusiastic about a variety of other genres but is ultimately a rock ‘n roller at heart. He has performed in bands over the years as a singer, guitarist, and bassist, and received classical guitar and jazz vocal training during his tertiary studies. Driven by a deep passion for performance and a belief in making it more accessible to young artists, he co-founded Johnman Concerts - a live music venue in the historic heart of Stellenbosch. The initiative offers a platform for emerging young artists through weekly concerts in an intimate setting.

Renier is currently expanding his skills by pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce in International Business. He hopes to apply the knowledge he gains to better understand the intersection of music, culture, and business.

Come see him perform this July in the Vienna Summer Music Festival!
